With his first book, Le Graal et la Littérature (LÂge dhomme, 1983), Alexandre Leupin established himself as a pionnier of the renewal of Medieval studies through contemporary theory.
His second work, Barbarolexis, Medieval Literature and Sexuality (Harvard, 1989; Italian translation, Cuculibri 1992) is a fundamental exploration of sexual metaphors in Medieval and Renaissance literature, grounded on rhetoric, theology and psychoanalysis.
Fiction et Incarnation (Flammarion, 1993) redraws the relationship between religion and literature. An English version has been published by the University of Minnesota Press in February 2003.
La Passion des Idoles, Foi et Pouvoir dans la Bible et la Chanson de Roland has been published by LHarmattan (2000). Phallophanies, la chair et le sacré is devoted to the fundamental debate between idols and icons in modern culture, and has been published by les Éditions du Regard in 2000.
Lacan Today, Psychoanalysis, Science, Religion an introduction to Jacques Lacan's entire work has been published by The Other Press, New York, in December 2004.
Alexandre Leupin has directed two international colloquia, Lacan and the Human sciences (which he prefaced and edited for the University of Nebraska Press, 1991), and La Chose médiévale The Medieval Thing in 1991.
His interest for the often neglected relationship between sciences and humanities led him to become associate editor of the web journal www.chairetmetal.com. In 2005, Alexandre has founded the internet journal www.mondesfrancophones.com.
Alexandre Leupin is the author of numerous articles on diverse topics (medieval French literature, modern French literature, psychoanalysis, epistemology, patristics...); he has given lectures in Switzerland, Italy, France, Belgium, Canada and the US. He was visiting professor at the University of California, Los Angeles (1991) and Berkeley (1996). He has been recently named LSU Foundation Florence M. Kidd and Isaac Gregorie Sr. Professor in French studies, as well as Distinguished Research Master by Louisiana State University.
